CHURCH OF SAINT BENEDICT

English Speaking Community

 Annual Report 2016-2017

The English Speaking community is a multi-national congregation comprising mainly Filipino Domestic Helpers, expatriate workers, overseas Chinese staying in Hong Kong and local people. The parish activities enrich the spiritual life of community members and enable them to socialize in a place far away from their homeland.

Fr. Raja Duggimpudi, PIME is the assistant priest and spiritual advisor of the English Speaking community. Later in March 2017, Fr. Fructuoso (Tito) Lopez Martin, MG joined in the church.

We had invited parishioners from different parishes within our deanery to attend the Lenten and Advent Recollections in our parish. We also hosted the Living Rosary twice, which were participated and joined by the members and parishioners.

Also, Sister Eddula Anitha, a missionary sister of Immaculate Heart of Mary, had joined our English community to assist the English Sunday School.

The following groups with members serving a two-year term are responsible for most of the parish activities for the English speaking community:

Coordinating Group

The Coordinating Group coordinates major activities of the English speaking community and acts as a link between the English and the Chinese communities through the Parish Council. Mrs. Susie Cheng is the chairlady and Mr. Fernando Sun is the vice-chairman of the community. (Ms. Susan Baydo, the vice-chairlady, resigned on 30.7.2017.) Mr. Joseph Poon is our representative to the council and Mrs. Adelia Poon is our treasurer. The secretary of the community is Ms. Marilou Jamoyot.

The group meets once a month on Sunday with the Working Group leaders. Together they organize parish functions such as Christmas and Easter celebrations. They also assist the priests in celebrating important events like Midnight Mass, Holy Week liturgies and annual recollections.

Working Groups:

1.   ALTAR SERVERS GROUP

Ms. Grace Arizabal is the leader of the group. The Altar Servers Group has 15 members, including Filipinos, Indonesian and children or students taken or enrolled in the Sunday School Catechism class. They prepare the Altar for the Eucharistic celebration and instruct members of their proper places and functions of service during the Eucharistic celebration such as to keep used sacred vessels and linens for the next Mass. The group also helps and joins in many church activities such as sharing, teaching, cooking and other activities of the church.

2.   BIBLE SHARING GROUP

Miss Derlyn Ramos is the leader of the group. The Bible Sharing Group is 22 years old in July 2016. Its main objective is to read, live and share the Word of God through the Holy Bible and to prepare any new member to choose or join in the four liturgical groups: Lector, Eucharistic Ministry, Altar Server and the Usherette. Its 46 members are divided into 3 working ministries, (1) the Membership Ministry, to conduct orientation of new comers to become prospective members and let them understand the procedure of the work done in the group. (2) Tradition and Procedure, prepares the altar during the Bible sharing activity. (3) Music Ministry, prepare songs and lyrics for sharing sessions. Rosary is prayed every Sunday morning and a monthly Bible Enthronement for every first Sunday of the Month with the invited speaker.  They listen and share their Bible reflections and faith experiences in life before the twelve noon mass. They also actively participate in some community outreach activities and church activities.

3.   CHOIR GROUP

Miss Alma Caballeda is the leader of this group. The English Choir has about 40 members. The group leads the singing in the Church during the Sunday English Mass and other liturgies. Singing is usually accompanied by guitar and organ. They have 3 guitarists, 1 organist and 3 conductresses; sometimes the Youth Band will join and help. Every Sunday from 10:30-11:30 am they have their song practice. They have their monthly birthday celebration. Besides singing they have excursion, outing and outreach activities during statutory holidays. They usually stay in the Church after Mass on Sunday for the song practice and group meetings. Some members also join in the Monthly Rosary prayer.

4.   EUCHARISTIC MINISTERS GROUP

Ms. Nilda Jabinigay is the leader of the group; her duties are to give the schedule and tasks to the members in preparation for the Holy Eucharist. The Eucharistic Ministers Group has about 17 members, both Filipinos, African and Chinese parishioners. Later in June 2017, one of the members left the group; at present, there are 16 members. Their duties are to help the priest to deliver the Body and Blood of Christ during Mass. They had finished the refresher / training seminar both for old and new members to refine their way of serving the Eucharist. Some members are helping in teaching at Sunday school and also join other activities of the community.

5.   LECTORS GROUP

Ms. Marcia Sun is the leader of this group. The Lectors Group consists of 20 members who read the Scriptures during Sunday Mass and other liturgies. Members are Filipinos and Chinese. Many of them serve as commentators and readers in all liturgies. The group in-charge prepares and attends to those who wish to offer prayer intentions during Mass and helps and coordinates with the priest in preparing the Prayers of the Faithful. Some of the members also help in preparing the celebration of the community.

Antolie Rimando and Mary Jane Galletes are the two projector operators who project the Scriptures, prayers and hymns onto the Church front wall during mass.

6.   SUNDAY SCHOOL GROUP

Ms. Marilou Capawa is the leader of this group. The English Sunday School prepares children of the community for their Sacrament of Initiation. School term starts in September and ends in May and classes begin at 10:15 am and finish at 11:30 am.

Last year, there were 39 students registered and they were divided into 6 levels according to their knowledge and age. They were taught and looked after by 10 teachers and 3 assistants, under the supervision of Sister Anitha. They also encourage the student to participate in Mass celebration and do the Rosary prayers.

The teachers and students from level 5 are participating in the liturgy as readers and Prayers of the Faithful, while parents in level 1-4 participate in the offering. Since January 2015, the Sunday school children sing as the choir at the 12:00 noon Mass on the fourth Sunday of each month. They also take part in the monthly celebration of the community, including the celebration of Christmas and Holy Easter.

This year, there were 4 students receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation on Pentecost Sunday and 6 students receiving the First Holy Communion on Corpus Christi.

7.   USHERETTES GROUP

The Usherettes Group has 24 members.   They collect donations, Mass intentions and prepare the offering during Eucharistic celebrations.  Before the mass, they prepare the Bulletin board, candles and chairs needed for the Extraordinary ministries, escort the parishioners to their seats before the start of the Mass especially the late comers.  They coordinate with the Lectors and the Eucharistic Ministers groups during the Eucharistic celebration. The members also participate in outside activities of the church such as Bible encounter and seminars; they also help and join the activities of the community.
